Sam Brown has qualified for the £2,000 Shearby’s Lake Masters event taking place on 24th September. Twenty six (26) anglers attended this latest round held on Alder lake all hopeful of a place in the final. In order to qualify for the 45-peg final, anglers must win one of the forty five qualifying matches held between April and September.
“I drew peg 51, which was the same peg I fished the day before during a quick late afternoon practice session to see what depth the fish wanted to be at! I was happy with this as there were a lot of fish in the area yesterday, so I was hopeful they would still be about“.
“All the pegs on this lake have an island to fish to within reach of the pole, except my peg! It has a sunken bar at about 13m which is only 18inch deep. I’ve set one rig on top of the bar, which would serve as my main line of attack. I also set up an edge rig to my right at 5m under a bush and a 5m rig in front and also a mugging rig for any cruisers“.
“I had a slow start to the match compared to everyone around me just catching a few stockies down the edge on corn followed by two carp at 5m on 6mm pellets. After the first hour I’d managed to pick off odd fish on the sunken bar, feeding 6mm pellets via a kinder pot. I had to keep changing hook baits from a 6mm hard pellet to a 4mm expander to keep bites coming. When the bites eventually dropped off altogether, I managed a bit of a run of good-sized carp on some 4mm expanders I had coloured bright white“.
“With the sunken bar in front of me, I noticed the fish had to come up in the water to come over it, so in between bites I flicked my mugging rig along the bar fishing twelve inches deep hoping to drop on their heads. This worked a treat and I had a good run of fish doing this. I also managed to pick off the odd ghostie cruiser that stood out a mile on the bar“!
“I’ve ended up with 74lb of carp, which was enough for 2nd in the match! But, most importantly, I qualified for the 2k Final later in the year as 1st place had already qualified“.
“I have to say, as well that the fishery is looking stunning, the Hull family are doing a great job as new owners. I can’t wait to get back and get some practice in for the final“.
