Sunday 1st April marked the beginning of this year’s Maver Mega Match This qualifier campaign. Twenty four events held at venues up and down the country began with a sell out qualifier at the ever-popular Midlands bagging mecca that is The Glebe. Conditions on the day were not ideal with temperatures, once again, reminding us that Winter is yet to make way for Spring resulting in the resident carp showing a reluctance to feed. That said, weight were respectable for the time of year, even if a bit localised.
Winner on the day, and the first man through to this year’s Maver Mega Match This final was Damien Beggs. The Garbolino / Lindholme backed Leeds man drew peg 47 on Pool 3 and started his match fishing the long pole with 6mm pellet on the hook, before switching to sweetcorn on the feeder to maintain a steady rate of carp coming to the net. Damien then ended the match fishing short, again with 6mm on the pole to end the day with a superb 147-12-00 to book his place in September’s final and to automatically progress through to this year’s Maver British Pole Championship final in August. A massive congratulations Damien!
Finishing in second place was Maver Hayfield Lakes man, David Burley. Dave drew peg 6 on Pool 1 and secured overall lake victory offering an equally impressive 120-14-00 to the scales at the end of the five hours. Bucking the trend, Dave offered maggot on the waggler to find carp up to 6lbs to put a decent amount of daylight between himself and third placed man, Simon Fry. Dave also qualifies for the Maver British Pole Championship final at Maver Hayfield Lakes and will be a firm favourite to win the event given his experience at the venue.
Rounding off the top three finish was Garbolino’s Simon Fry. Simon secured an overall lake win from peg 1 on Pool 1 weighing in 107lb exactly. Starting his match on the feeder over to the far bank, Simon caught five carp before switching to the pellet waggler to find bigger fish up to 8lbs to take the last of the automatic British Pole Championship qualification places.
