Wednesday 16th May marked the first of a kind exclusive retailer only pairs event ran and organised by Maver (UK) and hosted at the beautiful Maver Hayfield Lakes, Doncaster. With thirty eight (38) pairs taking part, competition was expected to be fierce. Conditions leading up to the event had been pleasant and settled. However, come the day of the match, temperatures plummeted with a strong, cold wind battering the complex for most of the day. That said, despite the weather doing its best to hamper anglers efforts, the standard of fishing was nothing short of what we have come to expect at Maver Hayfield Lakes with some truly stunning fish featuring in angler’s nets.
Anglers were pegges across the whole complex with one angler from each pair fishing Island lake with the other pegged on either little or big Adams. Points were awarded based on section finishes with overall placings being determined by the combined points score of both anglers from their respective sections. In the event of a tie, then weight would be the deciding factor.
Winning pair overall were local Bawtry rods Andrew Sellars and Andrew Randells from Rod & Reel. Andrew Sellars (pictured right) drew peg 14 on Island lake to win his nine (9) man section offering 74-02-00 to the scales to secure one (1) point. Partner Andrew Randells (left) secured a section win from peg 16 on Adam’s lake with 55-04-00 giving the pair a perfect two (2) point score – the only pair to do so on the day – and a cumulative weight of 129-06-00.
Second pair on the day finishing with a total of three (3) points were Syke House’s Martin Wood and Paul Taylor. Martin drew peg 47 on Adam’s lake and weighed in 59-06-00 to win his nine (9) man section with partner Paul finishing second in a tough section from peg 63 on Isand with 15-09-00.
Rounding off the top three pairs on the day were Liam Miller and Craig Priestley from Barnsley Bait & Tackle. Liam secured an overall lake victory from peg 55 on Adam’s offering a superb 98-00-00 to the scales at the end of the five hours whilst partner, Craig, managed 52-03-00 from peg 47 on Island lake to finish third in his ten (10) man section.
Individual honours on the day were taken by Doncaster Fishing Centre’s Paul Yates from peg 36 on Island lake with 111-01-00 of big carp taken from down his edge.
Rod & Reel received £140 plus selected items from the new Maver EVA luggage range.
Section winners received £55 each with lake winners receiving £90 each.
Congratulations to winning pair Andy Sellars and Andy Randells from Rod & Reel on a well earned victory.
All in all, a fantastic day was had by all competitors and the fishing, despite the arctic conditions, was good. Thank you to all the shops and their staff that attended this first of many retailer-focused events and a huge thank you to Maver Hayfield Lakes for hosting the event on behalf of Maver (UK).
What a venue!
